FRANK BRENNAN · PORTRAIT
THE PROPRIETOR
Frank Brennan
Third-generation owner of Frank’s Bar. Keeper of the keys, the tab, and everybody’s last excuse.
Frank Brennan III inherited the neighborhood institution his grandfather opened in 1948, along with a collection of unpaid tabs old enough to vote.
Frank has the look of a man who has heard every excuse twice and believed none of them the first time. Customers arrive expecting a bartender, philosopher, or confessor. They usually get a measured pour, a deadpan one-liner, and directions to Father Joe’s on Third Avenue.
MICKEY MALLOY · PORTRAIT
RESIDENT PHILOSOPHER
Mickey Malloy
Down on his luck, permanently on his stool, and occasionally brilliant by accident.
Mickey Malloy arrived for one bad night and somehow became part of the furniture. Life has relieved him of jobs, romances, money, and most reasons to check the time, but it has not managed to take his seat.
Under the worn coat and permanent hangover is a mind sharpened by hard knocks. Mickey speaks rarely; when he does, a piece of accidental philosophy usually falls out between complaints about the lighting and whatever Vinny talked him into.
VINNY VALE · PORTRAIT
OPPORTUNITY SEEKER
Vinny Vale
Every bad idea is a business plan. Every stranger is apparently a future connection.
Vinny Vale is an opportunity seeker, which is what a man calls himself when “unemployed instigator” sounds too honest. Every woman at the bar is, according to Vinny, one conversation away from appreciating his expertise.
His swagger is louder than his confidence. Vinny hides uncertainty beneath jokes, schemes, and declarations of romantic mastery, but when the night collapses he is still the first man leaning over Mickey’s shoulder with another terrible solution.
JIMMY McSTOUT · PORTRAIT
DOOR POLICY
Jimmy “Fisticuffs” McStout
Five-foot-five of leverage, timing, and extremely specific anatomical warnings.
Jimmy McStout has never considered his height an obstacle. Frank hired him for the door because Jimmy understands leverage, timing, and the educational value of letting a loud man underestimate him.
Known as Fisticuffs mostly by people smart enough not to test the nickname, he keeps the peace with a flat stare, a level voice, and terrible news delivered calmly. He does not look for trouble. He simply knows where to put it when it arrives.
KATHLYN “KAT” BRENNAN · PORTRAIT
TERRITORY MANAGER
Kathlyn “Kat” Brennan
Quick hands, quicker mouth, and the only person who notices trouble before it introduces itself.
Kat Brennan is Frank’s niece and the unofficial territory manager of every square foot behind the bar. She moves through a crowded room with a bottle opener at her back and the alert posture of someone who has already measured every exit.
Kat inherited the Brennan mouth but not Frank’s willingness to wait. She has a soft spot for Mickey, no patience for Vinny’s performances, and an instinct for keeping Frank’s Bar upright while the men around her are busy becoming the next story.
